Rookie Lifeguard

Rookie Lifeguard is aimed at children – though the skills learned through the course of the programme are just as valuable to people of all ages. The scheme begins with Stage 1 of the Bronze Award and progresses to Stage 3 of the Gold Award, starting off at an ability level suitable for brand-new swimmers and progressing to the level where our Rookie Lifeguards perform impressive lifesaving tows.

RLSS UK’s Rookie Lifeguard programme gives your child the skills they need to be confident in the pool or the sea – which means peace of mind for you. With colourful materials and fun, varied activities, the Rookie Lifeguard scheme teaches children how to swim and enjoy water safely, whether in shallow or deeper water. Built into the programme are lessons in valuable survival, rescue and sports skills… all delivered in an exciting way that will get children involved and motivated.

Even the shyest children find they make new friends through the Rookie Lifeguard scheme, as teamwork and peer support are crucial elements of the programme.

Survive and Save

RLSS UK’s Survive & Save Programme is the lifesaving awards programme for teens and adults (12 years+). The awards are challenging but fun to complete and they are arranged into Bronze, Silver and Gold levels to ensure that you continue to develop your lifesaving skills as you progress through the awards.

The awards teach lifesaving rescue, self-rescue, survival, lifesaving sport skills and also develop swimming ability and fitness.

There are four award areas to achieve, the Medallion Awards, the Beach Awards, the Stillwater Awards and the Sport Awards and you can choose to specialise in one area or learn a broader range of skills by completing multiple awards.

The highest achievement in the Survive & Save Programme is the Distinction Award, which is awarded to those who achieve 3 Gold Level awards within a 24 month period.

Water Smart Award

RLSS UK created the Water Smart Award to establish an essential skill based programme, that as experts we consider everyone in the UK & Ireland should achieve to ensure safety and competence around water, which ultimately supports our ambition to prevent drownings.

It has been designed as a standalone award from our other water safety programmes and provides a gateway for participants go on to complete further awards to develop skills and knowledge to keep themselves and others safe whilst enjoying the water.

The award’s focus is on five main areas, these include:

  • Water Safety Awareness
  • Getting In and Out of the Water Safely
  • Safely Staying Afloat
  • Safely Moving in the Water
  • Performing Rescues Safely (Optional)
